Course Description
Aging is one of the most significant drivers of neurological change worldwide and understanding brain aging is central to advancing longevity science and healthy aging initiatives. This course introduces students to clinical neuroscience concepts used to examine cognitive resilience, neurodegeneration and age-related changes in the structure and function of the nervous system.
Students will focus on neural and cognitive changes across the lifespan and explore clinical, research, and translational perspectives that inform our understanding of brain aging. Emphasis will be placed on functional neuroanatomy, major cognitive systems, age-related changes in the central nervous system, modern neuroscience methodologies, clinical assessment of cognitive function, neurodegenerative and age-related brain disorders, and brain–behavior relationships.
Course Goals
At the completion of this course, students will be able to describe how neuroscience approaches are employed in the study of geroscience, and how age-related changes in the brain contribute to clinical and cognitive outcomes.
